Solo Exhibition: Evidence, Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY, 2020

Visual Studies Workshop Exhibition

From August 29 to November 21, 2020, my exhibition "Evidence" was showcased at the Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) Gallery, a respected institution dedicated to advancing the practice of visual arts. The VSW is renowned for its commitment to innovative visual arts and scholarship, making it an important venue for presenting critical work. This exhibition represents a significant continuation of my research and creative scholarship, building on my previous work in "Come to Selfhood," which has been celebrated for its exploration of Black masculinity and identity.

"Evidence" expands on the themes of "Come to Selfhood" by offering new portraits and perspectives that delve deeper into masculinity, gender identity, conformity, and resistance. The exhibition featured writings and conversations with notable figures such as playwright Jireh Holder, creative K. Anthony Jones, actor/singer Dyllon Burnside, and director/photographer/curator/writer Thomas Allen Harris. These contributions provided additional context and depth, enriching the narratives and enhancing the scholarly impact of the exhibition.

In homage to Frederick Douglass and his pioneering North Star newspaper, "Evidence" was both a newspaper and an exhibition. Newspapers were distributed through dispensers at various locations throughout Rochester, NY, including numerous schools and social and religious groups. This innovative approach ensured that a broad cross-section of the community experienced and benefited from the exhibition. The exhibition was documented through photographs and writings, with critical reviews from leading scholars and critics providing peer review. Dissemination included distribution of newspapers, as well as engagement with community groups and educational institutions, significantly contributing to the discourse on race, identity, and visual representation.
